Four new Black & White scholars begin their university journeys

09/10/2023

At Black & White, we are committed to empowering aspiring engineers through mentorship. Our scholarship programme emphasises the power of education and development to drive innovation and growth. We aim to nurture a network of future industry leaders.

Recently, we welcomed Christopher “Jack” Banzon and Trishell Canaya, who joined our team in Manila after participating in our programme. Now, a fresh cohort of Black & White scholars in Manila, including Uno Porcare, Ashley Reña, Kim Santiago, and Stanley Villanueva—all graduates of Makati Science High School—have started their studies at the University of the Philippines – Diliman.

Know more about them:

Eracrop Uno Porcare

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Uno was influenced by his father who graduated with an electrical engineering degree. Uno distinctly recalls accompanying his father to his workplace, where he was engaged in elevator maintenance. This experience deeply inspired Uno, fueling his ambition to follow his father and choose a similar career path. Out of the many branches of engineering, electrical engineering resonates with Uno the most due to its captivating applications and the potential to contribute positively to society through innovative technological advancements.

Ashley Reña

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

Growing up, Ashley has exhibited an enthusiasm for physics. Her passion for this subject does not stem from finding it easy, but rather from the satisfaction she experiences when solving mathematical problems and grasping scientific concepts. Ashley came to appreciate that science permeates every aspect of our lives, emphasising its necessity in our daily routines. This fascination drove her to pursue a career in engineering, viewing it as a platform to devise practical solutions while embracing her creativity.

Kim Santiago

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Kim has always aspired to be an engineer, inspired by the inner workings of machines, devices, and various human inventions. As a child, his parents would often gift him toy cars, and each time, driven by his curiosity, he would meticulously dissect them with a screwdriver. It was during these moments that Kim realised his passion for becoming a mechanical engineer. Despite the current circumstances not aligning perfectly with his ambitions, Kim remains open to exploring other opportunities that come his way, electrical engineering for instance, recognising that each experience will contribute to his growth and eventual success in the field.

Stanley Villanueva

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

Approaching his final year in senior high school, Stanley remained undecided about which course to pursue in college. Various options crossed his mind however, according to him, what sets engineering apart from the other courses is the knowledge he has acquired during his senior high school years. His research has shown him that electrical engineering offers a broad range of opportunities and would be the best fit for him. Stanley foresees time management posing a significant challenge in college. Nevertheless, he recognises that making necessary sacrifices will ultimately contribute to his personal growth and well-being.

We are excited to watch Uno, Ashley, Kim, and Stanley immerse themselves in their chosen fields, exploring their expertise and interests, and creating a positive impact in their academic journeys and beyond.
