About the role

To act as a Senior Power Systems Engineer for a multi-disciplined team. To provide sound technical, design support on MV and HV engineering disciplines, to ensure project requirements and clients’ specifications are fully met. Apply initiative and ownership to all key areas of responsibility.

Role Requirements
  • Results orientated individual with strong problem solving, technical realisation and coordination skills.
  • Has a relevant degree in engineering, or equivalent qualification, or sufficient suitable experience.
  • Able to demonstrate extensive experience of a wide range of technical areas.
  • Associate or student member of an appropriate professional body, such as IET or equivalent overseas organsiation.
  • Achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Appreciation of complementary specialisms such as acoustics, fire engineering and computer modeling in the design of buildings.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills both verbal and written. You will have proven ability in negotiating positive outcomes, resource planning, motivation and management.
  • Team-builder, able to support the team through training and mentoring.
  • Track record of having worked on a variety MV and HV designs and the delivery of small to large scale projects in a variety of sectors, from concept designs through to completion, able to execute power engineering
    activities within the budget and schedule, whilst maintaining technical integrity.
  • Computer literate include ETAP (or equivalent power systems analysis software), AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Technical knowledge of MV generation using a variety of prime movers (diesel, HVO, gas etc).
  • Technical knowledge in primary discipline and a thorough understanding of power systems and network design.
  • Technical knowledge of resilient control engineering relating to power systems.
  • Proficient at using IT based calculation and spreadsheet software.
  • Good understanding of BS and IEC standards, UK regulations and codes as well as applicable local codes or overseas equivalent.
  • Knowledge of National Grid, networks operators (DNOs and IDNOs) and Energy Network Association specifications and practices, or equivalent overseas organisations.
  • Current UK driving license.
Role Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the company by identifying new opportunities and potential areas for growth and also maintaining and
    developing existing client relationships.
  • Act as part of a multi-disciplinary design team to ensure successful preparation and delivery on project objectives, including providing technical support.
  • Produce budgets for clients based on their specifications and monitor spend to ensure that, as far as possible, projects are delivered within their budget and schedule. Liaise with the Client and external design teams as necessary for the successful delivery of projects.
  • Monitor and address own training and development requirements.
  • Keep up to date with technical developments, national and international standards and legislative requirements related to the discipline.
  • Compile specifications, drawings and relevant Contract documents and maintain the required technical quality of work, ensuring that designs comply
    with the relevant codes, standards, regulations and procedures.
  • Provide power systems engineering services design to buildings and infrastructure.
  • Identify scope and schedule changes in accordance with the change control process, maintain planning and cost control on all scopes.
  • Represents the team/group/profession/discipline at external meetings.
  • Responsible for monitoring budgets and controlling expenditure to meet financial targets for own areas.
  • Visit UK and overseas sites and factories to undertake inspections, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests etc.
  • In addition, is responsible for one or more of the
    following:

    • Manages small projects, work area or technical skill set
    • Responsible for predicting and planning future resources, which may include setting up new projects and project plans
    • Responsible for the design/ delivery of events, activities, processes, and /or projects which have a major impact on the management of the business: allocates tasks and coordinates activities
    • Responsible for the performance and development of others, providing guidance, training, motivational and directional feedback
  • Preparation of MV and HV equipment specifications and data sheets using proforma documents along with controls and overall project specifications.
  • Selection of protection schemes for MV and HV networks, prepare protection strategy documents and report.
  • Undertake power systems network analysis including:
    • Protection studies
    • Load flows
    • Fault studies
    • Arc flash studies
    • Earthing studies
    • Harmonic studies
  • Carries out engineering calculations to ensure
    drawings meet required robust industry and legal
    standards.
