Tom wins ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ award

21/02/2019

Tom gained a broad view of engineering disciplines by studying Architectural Engineering at the University of Leeds. He also participated in their study abroad program, spending a year at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. After graduating with an MEng, Tom started his career as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer.

Having been taught by lecturers with varied backgrounds in both engineering and architecture as well as being seconded on site with Crowne House Technologies, Tom fully understands the importance of considering projects from the points of view of others in the design team – aesthetically, financially as well as technically.

Tom played a key role in the Black & White team that delivered the design of two large Tier III data centre projects in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from concept through to detailed design and shop drawings. Working for the contractor, as well as ensuring the design met all their requirements, it was Tom’s role to ensure all other requirements and comments were incorporated from the main client, client’s advisor and the Uptime Institute throughout the design.

Championing the use of 3D dynamic thermal modelling and BIM to improve the efficiency and coordination of design, he uses these tools to present complex design issues to clients. For example, sun path analyses, which demonstrates how the cooling load of the building is affected by building massing and orientation as well as the beneficial effects of brise soleil.

It is the broad working mindset beyond his years that Tom has acquired which sets him apart, adding extra value to appointments by having the ability to approach a project from within the ‘skin’ of a contractor, architect and client.

Tom has experience in many sectors including healthcare, education, commercial & retail which include projects in both Europe and the Middle East. Since arriving in Dubai 18 months ago Tom has gone from strength to strength in his role and adapted well to the demands of the construction industry.

Tom is currently based on site at one of Dubai’s prestigious mixed-use developments where Black & White Engineering are working with the MEP contractor to produce shop drawings and assist in value engineering. Whilst this is something new compared to the office-based design work that he is more used to, it provides a new set of challenges, adding more strings to his bow and making him a more rounded engineer.

We are delighted Tom has been awarded this accolade which is truly well deserved!
