Located on land reclaimed from the Caspian Sea, Deniz Mall is a 120,000sqm highly anticipated retail and leisure destination now open to visitors.
The iconic building was originally designed as a convention centre in 2007 by Chapman Taylor. Black & White Engineering entered a collaboration to repurpose the project to become Azerbaijan’s premier entertainment venue when the building was part constructed in 2015.
We developed new MEP strategies to adapt the building for its current mixed-use purpose which includes entertainment, leisure, F&B and retail facilities. Key challenges included ensuring no MEP plant was visible externally, especially on the feature eight star-shaped wings roof, inspired by Azerbaijan’s national emblem. Seawater cooling and a bespoke boiler flue dilution system were amongst many design features necessary to achieve this goal. Integrating a water feature with diving platforms through the centre of the mall late in the project also was an interesting challenge.
Congratulations to all those who worked tirelessly to deliver the vision and provide the region with a unique venue for families and visitors to enjoy.
