R&D Engineer

About the role

The Research Engineer should have a strong background in MEP systems and sustainability strategies for data centers. This role will be instrumental in developing in-house research topics, publishing white papers, and translating technical insights into practical, actionable strategies that influence industry standards and our internal design practice.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-dept research on sustainable MEP technologies and systems tailored to data centre environments.
  • Develop and lead independents research projects aligned with the company’s goal for innovation and net-zero infrastructure.
  • Analyze and evaluate data center design performance (energy use, water, carbon emissions, etc.) using industry tools and sustainability frameworks.
  • Translate technical findings into compelling white papers, internal reports, and client presentation.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams (MEP, Sustainability, Design) to support ongoing project development with the latest research.
  • Communicate research findings to internal stakeholders, clients, and industry forums in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Contribute to the thought leadership of B&W Engineering by publishing research in external journals, platforms, and industry events.
Desirable Skills
  • Familiarity with LEED, BREEAM, Uptime Institute, ASHRAE, or similar frameworks.
  • Knowledge of of embodied carbon analysis, life cycle assessment (LCA), or carbon accounting methologies
  • Experience with data analytics tools, simulation software, or visualization platforms (e.g., Python, Power BI, IESVE).
  • Prior experience writing or contributing to published white papers or academic articles.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, Building Services, Sustainability, or a related field.
  • Proven knowledge of MEP systems for data centers and their integration with sustainability strategies
  • Passion for sustainability and innovation in the built environment, particularly in high-performance infrastructure.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and data visualization skills.
  • Experience conducting and presenting technical research.
  • Ability to work independently and develop original research topics
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
